Lakers vs. Hornets Running Diary: Los Angeles overcomes a 14 point deficit as Samuel L. Jackson Sits Courtside
Lakers vs. Hornets! Los Angeles is looking for its third straight road win and fourth in a row over all. They are sitting on a 26-16 record and are two games ahead of the Grizzles and Clippers for the …. Who I am kidding? Let's just get it out of the way now. Yes I am aware that we are playing the Hornets, the team that almost traded us Chris Paul. Yes, I completely remember that the League Vetoed the trade and that the Hornets had to take a worse trade from the Clippers. I am also aware that the failed trade was the cause of Lamar Odom having to be traded for peanuts (actually it wasn’t even peanuts; it was a coupon for peanuts that we still have not used!). If the Lakers lose tonight I might vomit.
10:00: both Derek Fisher and Metta World Peace shoot air balls in the first two minutes of the game-that can’t be a good sign: New Orleans leads 5-2.
8:00: Two guys I have never heard of score 5 straight points and the Hornets extend their lead to 10-5. This might be a long night.
7:55: The announcers mention that Mike D’Antoni resigned from the Knicks earlier today, and in all likelihood they will pursue Phil Jackson aggressively over the summer. That means the Clippers have Chris Paul, Dallas has Lamar Odom, Phil Jackson is probably going to be a Knick and we still have Metta World Peace with two years left on his contract. This is definitely going to be a long night.
4:46: Bynum lobs the ball into Gasol who barely leaves his feet and gently lays the ball in: Hornets leads 16-14.
2:25: Steve Blake misses a three: Hornets leads 20-17 and call a time out.
The game returns from a commercial break and the Lakers side line reporter is interviewing none other than Samuel L Jackson!! The game just got a lot better. The side line reporter tries to ask Samuel about the Lakers. Let’s see what Mr. Jackson has to say:
Sam Jackson sits courtside (Layne Murdoch/NBAE)
Lakers Reporter: “You’re here working on a Quentin Tarantino Film?”
Samuel L. Jackson: “Do you read the Bible Ringo? I got this passage I have memorized”
LR: “What do you think about this Lakers team Samuel?”
SLJ: “Yes they deserve to die and I hope they burn in hell!”
LR: “How’s your jump shot these days?”
SLJ: “Reach into that bag and grab my wallet, it’s the one that says “Bad A%# Motha @#$#*”
LR: “Have you been playing a lot of golf, there are a lot of nice courses around here?”
SLJ: “Say ‘what’ again. Say ‘what’ again, I dare you, I double dare you mother*$#@%, say ‘what’ one more @#$damn time!”
That is some quality side line reporting. I wish Samuel L Jackson were at every Lakers game.
End of the first: I have no idea what happened the rest of the quarter, I was too busy thinking about that Sam Jackson interview. All I know is that the Lakers are losing 28-20. It’s still early in the game, and that Sam Jackson appearance energized me for the rest of the night. I feel a Lakers comeback.
9:31: Lakers are down by eleven, 34-23. The NBA’s condensed schedule has been brutal on all the players this season, and the Lakers look exhausted.
6:11: Kobe gets a steal and brings the ball up the court; he passes to MWP who passes to Fisher who hits a three point shot: The Hornets Lead 38-31.
3:54: Kobe bulldozes into the lane and double pump dunks over Chris Kaman. Kobe gets the whistle and converts the free threw. Los Angeles is still down by ten, 44-34.
This is starting to get depressing; can we get another Samuel L. Jackson interview?
2:27: The announcers say “Bynum is immediately being SWARMED by the Hornets”, as he is fouled in the paint. Ha-ha, its not Sam Jackson, but that silly pun will do. Lakers are still down by eleven 48-37.
1:34: Jarrett Jack hits a long three to extend the Hornets lead to fifteen 52-37.
1:10: Jack hits another shot, and is 8-8 with 17 points in the half.
End of the Half: The Lakers are trailing 54-40. The Hornets are playing well, but the Lakers just do not have enough energy tonight and it’s hard to blame them, this is the second game of a back to back, and third game in four nights. They also played a double overtime game last night as well.
10:41: Belinelli hits a long two point jumper. Belinelli? I am watching the Jersey Shore? The way the Lakers are playing tonight I bet JWOW could put up 15 points tonight.
7: 57: Trevor Ariza takes a long pass and drives to the lane untouched for an easy basket. Trevor, I don’t remember who left who, it was so long ago. I all know is that you’re in New Orleans on a 10 win team and we’re stuck with Metta World Peace. I think we both made some mistakes, please come back to us: Hornets Lead 62-49.
5:46: Los Angeles is on an 8-0 run and cuts the lead to 5. Gasol grabs an offensive rebound and throws a lob pass to Bynum who is under the rim, and Metta World Peace stretches out as far as he can and interferes with the pass and knocks it into Jarrett Jacks hands.
5:05: Metta goes to the line and miss both free throws. Sometimes I feel like MWP is trying to make us lose the game on purpose.
3:06: MWP misses a three point shot which leads to a Hornets fast break and an easy two points. The Lakers are trailing 68-61. I rest my case your Honor.
2:09: Gasol hits two free throws: Lakers down by 5.
0:43: Bryant hits Barnes in the corner for a perfectly shot three. Lakers tie up the game 68-68.
End of the 3rd Quarter: The Lakers end the quarter on a 9-2 run, and go into the 4th tied at 70-70. Bryant, Gasol and Bynum have scored 49 of the Lakers 70 points.

10:00: Lakers trail by 5 points and have not yet scored in the 4th quarter.
9:15: Bynum with a nasty block on the Hornets back up center. He just snatched the ball out of the hair and immediately ‘palmed’ it.
6:52: Kobe with a triple pump reverse layup for the hardest two points you will ever see. Lakers trail by 3.
5:34: Pau grabs a loose ball and immediately throws a lob pass to Bynum for the dunk. These two are really developing some chemistry. I’d be a shame if the Lakers trade Gasol before Thursday’s trade deadline.
2:42: Jarrett Jack hits two free throws to give the Hornets a three point lead 91-88.
1:32: Lakers trail by 5, with the Hornets
0:58: Gasol shoots a three!! For a second I thought it was actually going to go in. But of course it was a miss. What the heck is Gasol doing out passed the three point line away.
0:19: Kobe fouled while shooting a three. The Lakers trail 93-90. Kobe hasn’t shot yet, but every Lakers fan in the world knows that all three free throws are as good as gold. Kobe lives for these moments. There are a few players in the league who I would trust in this spot, but none more than Kobe. My top 5 end of the game clutch free throw shooters are, in reverse order: Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, Ray Allen, Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant.
0:19: Kobe makes all three without a sweat.
0:02: Bynum grabs the rebound and the Lakers have a chance to win the game.
0:02: Kobe misses a tough shot as he is falling out of bounds. It looked good leaving his hands, but we are going to another over time: 93-93.
3:04: Lakers lead 98-95.
2:00: Lakers lead by one 98-97.
1:21: Ariza hits a long two, Hornets lead 99-98.
0:58: Fisher hits a two: Lakers lead 100-99:
0:40: MWP gets the steal and takes the ball coast to coast for a hard fought lay up! Lakers lead 102-99.
End of OT: Lakers come from a 14 point deficit to force overtime for the second straight night, and win the game 107-101. Los Angeles is starting to put things together and look great. Bynum and Gasol have built a real chemistry together and suddenly Los Angeles looks like a real threat in the West.
